The Trot:

-A 2-beat gait, compare to the passage

The optimum trot in the Dressage Dog shows maximum suspension and elevation of each step.  The dog is relaxed, yet driving from behind.  The back is relaxed such that it "floats", or "swings" slightly with each step.  The dog's tail acts as an extension of the back and assists the dog in balancing and achieving that suspension and elevation.   The dog synchronizes steps with the handler depending on the size of the dog.
